A Green & Social Harvest: gender equality and sustainable environmental management certified

The cooperative Bodega Cuatro Rayas was just certified by the NQA to ISO 14001, ratifying it as a responsible and committed company to the protection of the environment

Cuatro Rayas has also gained the ‘Óptima Castilla y León’ distinction, which recognises it as a ‘Collaborating Entity in Equal Opportunities for Women and Men’

La Seca, 31 August 2022.- The cooperative from DO Rueda Bodega Cuatro Rayas begins its peak season with good news after kicking off the harvest and being notified that it was granted ISO 14001 certification, a distinction that recognises it as a responsible and committed company to the protection of the environment. This hallmark comes to the cooperative in a year when Cuatro Rayas’ active momentum regarding social and environmentally responsible initiatives has taken shape through different actions. In terms of environmental care—as well as moving forward with its commitment to organic agriculture and soil and plant-friendly techniques—a solar farm was built to minimise the dependence on non-renewable energy; the cooperative members have received training in good agricultural practices to avoid water pollution, and progress has been made in its commitment to recyclable and recycled materials.

In addition, in terms of social sustainability, the winery has officially registered its Equality Plan and, since then, it has been working in line with this action programme regarding human resources in such a way that, among other actions, egalitarian criteria have been implemented in the staff recruitment for the harvesting tasks. Furthermore, in terms of Equality, Bodega Cuatro Rayas has been recognised as a ‘Collaborating Entity in Equal Opportunities for Women and Men’, after being granted by the Family and Equal Opportunities Department of the Regional Government of Castile and León the ‘Óptima Castilla y León’ distinction, intended for those companies in the Autonomous Region that “apart from abiding by the ongoing obligations, they voluntarily adopt policies aimed at implementing measures, improvement processes and best practices in its human resources management and organisational model with regard to equal opportunities between women and men, reconciling personal and family life with work, and eliminating the gender pay gap”.

Within this social and environmental sustainability responsibility context, over the last year, an analysis and assessment process of the environmental risks related to winemaking has been conducted. As a result, once the preventive measures proposed for risk avoidance and environment protection while conducting business were implemented, Cuatro Rayas got through an internal audit by the certification company NQA and gained the official standard ISO 14001 for hazard prevention and environmental protection. Thus, Bodega Cuatro Rayas again proves its commitment to environmental respect and preservation, including pollution prevention, sustainable use of the resources, mitigation and adaptation to climate change, and protection of biodiversity and ecosystems.
