The cooperative winery from DO Rueda won three gold medals at the Canadian competition ‘Seléctions Mondiales des Vins’ with three of its most renowned wines, ‘61’ Dorado en Rama NV, Amador Diez Verdejo Cuvée 2017, and Green & Social Verdejo 2022.

La Seca, 19 October 2023.- The thirtieth edition of the prestigious competition ‘Seléctions Mondiales des Vins’–held last weekend in the Canadian city of Montreal, Province of Quebec, and considered the largest wine contest in North America–awarded gold medals for the quality of three wines from the cooperative winery Bodega Cuatro Rayas.

The jury of the contest, where around 1600 wines from 26 countries have been submitted, awarded a gold medal to three brands of the cooperative winery based on the designation of origin Rueda, which share a common point—all of them are made using Verdejo variety, the most characteristic of the region, while the profile of the awarded three wines is clearly different, reaffirming thus not only the versatility of the grape variety but also Cuatro Rayas’ keen interest and ability to interpret in various ways the grape that has become the main protagonist of their vinification.

Therefore, 61’ Dorado en Rama NV, Amador Diez Verdejo Cuvée 2017 andGreen & Social Verdejo 2022 add three golds to their list of triumphs, as well as show again the high quality of the grape that more than 300 cooperative members of the winery grow and supports the livelihood of about 700 men and women in thirty villages around the provinces of Valladolid and Segovia.

Amador Diez Verdejo Cuvée 2017 is a single-variety wine fermented in barrels for which the grape is selected from the oldest Verdejo vineyards of the cooperative; some of them are even pre-phylloxera. With very limited production, it is Cuatro Rayas’ most unique and artisan wine, and it is characterized by its great ageing potential in the bottle since it is vinified particularly to improve its longevity.

61’ Dorado en Rama NVis a fortified wine blending the Verdejo variety with Palomino Fino from century-old vines, a variety that is currently banned from planting in DO Rueda but of which the cooperative winery keeps a few hectares of old vineyards. This wine is produced by ageing it in butts with 1/6 of their capacity empty to promote the creation of an indigenous yeasts veil and with a single taking out (saca) per year, which is replaced with wine aged for a year in a concrete vat, to provide with the necessary nutrients to keep the veil.

Lastly, Green & Social Verdejo 2022 fermented in stainless steel vats using grapes from organic farming certified vineyards. Green & Social Verdejo 2022 is a young varietal that, with the bottling materials and own spirit, sums up the sustainable philosophy of the cooperative winery, which seeks to improve independently the environmental well-being by improving the quality of life of the people in rural areas.
