To mark this 90th anniversary, Cuatro Rayas has selected a collection of historical and contemporary images that reflect representative moments from these nine decades of passion for vineyards and wine.
This Friday, the opening of the photographic exhibition was held, attended by Clara Eufemia Rivera, mayor of La Seca, and Ignacio Martín Obregón, president of Bodega Cuatro Rayas. They visited, together with cooperative wine-growing members and local residents—who this weekend are celebrating their popular Verdejo Festival—this visual journey through the evolution of the ways of working with, seeing, and feeling wine and the vine from 1935 to the present day.
The exhibition is located in the room that houses the historic barrels where one of the winery’s most characteristic and renowned creations, ‘61’ Dorado en Rama, is aged, and it can be visited as a complement to the wine tourism activities offered by the winery.
Verdejo, quality of life
Bodega Cuatro Rayas was founded in 1935 under the name “Bodega Cooperativa de La Seca” as a way to optimize the profits obtained from winemaking by local growers through the joint efforts of the town’s residents
This collaborative spirit, together with the legacy of three generations of families passionate about wine, vines, and the Verdejo grape variety, continues today—90 years later—to give meaning and identity to a cooperative winery that stands out for its leadership in producing high-quality white wines under the Rueda designation of origin.
The cooperative winery presented the results of a study establishing the current carbon footprint of the winery is 0,34 kg CO2 per litre of wine produced, and all the electrical power needed for conducting its business comes from renewable sources.
La Seca, 15 November 2023.- – Bodega Cuatro Rayas—the cooperative winery located in the designation of Origin Rueda—presents the results of a report developed by the auditing company Auren between September 2021 and August 2022 to calculate its carbon footprint. The study establishes that the footprint for that specific period amounted to 4,671.94 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, and the carbon footprint indicator of the winery corresponds to 0.34 kg CO2e per litre of wine produced,a number which is approximately half of the last one obtained in a similar study. Among the data in the report, it is also highlighted that all the power supply in Bodega Cuatro Rayas comes from renewable energy sources, data confirmed through the Guarantee of Origin redemption system used by the Spanish Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC), allowing to conclude that Bodega Cuatro Rayas’ emissions data from electrical consumption is zero..
This progress in reducing the winery’s carbon footprint goes in hand with other efforts, where Cuatro Rayas actively supports the natural environment. In addition to continuing with its commitment to organic agriculture and soil and plant-friendly techniques, the winery has a solar farm to minimise the dependence on non-renewable energy; conducts good agricultural practices training for the cooperative members in order to avoid water pollution; and has committed to recyclable and recycled materials for bottling and other tasks in the workplace. On top of that, it is worth recalling that last year, Cuatro Rayas passed an internal audit carried out by the certification company NQA, achieving the official standard ISO 14001 for hazard prevention and environmental protection.
Along with the development of this carbon footprint study of the winery, a roadmap outlining the following steps to be taken in terms of sustainability has been drafted by the same company, including efforts such as registering the carbon footprint, obtaining the ‘Wineries for Climate Protection’ certification, as well as a decarbonisation plan to minimise the environmental impact.
‘GREEN & SOCIAL’ COMMITMENT he natural environment and the people in rural areas are at the core of Bodega Cuatro Rayas since the beginning, since both the fruit of nature—the grapes and vines—and the people who cultivate it—the wine grower members—are the driving force and the ultimate goal giving meaning to the cooperative. On this basis, the winery has its own emblem in pursuit of winegrowing and social sustainability: ‘green & social’, a seal that attests to the commitment of Cuatro Rayas to respect both the environment and the well-being of the people as a focus of action.
Besides, this cooperative is actively engaged in other efforts such as equality, generational renewal, or the creation of opportunities in the rural areas and employs over 700 men and women in 30 villages across the provinces of Valladolid and Segovia. Its leitmotif ‘Verdejo, quality of life’ summarises its firm conviction that its wines are helping to take care of people and the rural areas where they carry out their activity, whereby it strives to achieve a balance between profitability, value and sustainability.
La Seca, 9 November 2023. – Once again this year, the cooperative winery Bodega Cuatro Rayas stands among the best wines in ‘Guía Gourmets’, following the publishing of the 2024 issue of this renowned guide specialised in Spanish wine since its latest edition shows up to eight +90 scores for several wines of the winery in DO Rueda, based in the village of La Seca in the province of Valladolid.
Again, the Gourmets’ tasting team thus confirms the excellent work of the cooperative winery by considering several Cuatro Rayas’ winemaking profiles worthy of these outstanding scores, among which stands out, particularly the score awarded to the exclusive fortified wine ‘61’ Dorado en Rama, whose last taking out (saca) reached 94 points. In addition to this wine combining Palomino Fino variety with Verdejo in its winemaking process, six other single-variety white wines from the winery received high scores from the tasting team of ‘Guía Gourmets’: Pisuerga Verdejo 2020, aged for 18 months in concrete egg received 93 points for its first vintage, the same score achieved by the old-vines Cuatro Rayas Viñedos Centenarios 2022 and the organic Cuatro Rayas Organic Verdejo 2022. In turn, Cuatro Rayas Vendimia Nocturna Verdejo 2022, flagship of the cooperative, Cuatro Rayas #CO. Organic Collection Verdejo 2022 2022, and the edition bearing the Gran Vino de Rueda de Cuatro Rayas ‘1935’ Verdejo 2021 scored 92 points in the wine tasting sessions. . Lastly, and changing the variety, the DO Rueda Cuarenta Vendimias Sauvignon Blanc 2022 scored 90 points in the guide.
LMG: Cuatro Rayas in the area for the best wine at Salón Gourmets 2024
The ‘Guía Gourmets’, a publishing with 39 issues so far, is characterised by blind assessing and rating Spanish wines—in this instance, wines from 1200 wineries around our country—and vintages that have not been tasted in previous issues of the guide. Among the more than 4700 wines reviewed in the 2024 edition, wines scoring +90 points due to their exceptional qualities have a prominent place in the publishing, where you can find up to eight brands from the cooperative Bodega Cuatro Rayas.
Likewise, during the exhibition of Salón Gourmets—a specialised professional fair held annually in Madrid by the team of the Guide—there is a unique hall to exhibit the best Spanish wines in each edition so that the visitors of the event can take a first-hand look at the Cuatro Rayas’ wines highlighted in this edition.
The prestigious specialized magazine will publish in November the rating given to the special tempranillo selection of Bodega Cuatro Rayas, which in addition to reaching 90 points, is highlighted as a recommended purchase due to its price for the value
La Seca, Valladolid, Spain. 25 de septiembre 2023-.‘Wine Enthusiast Magazine’, international benchmark in the world of wine, once again includes among its reviews an elaboration of the cooperative winery Bodega Cuatro Rayas. On this occasion, the editors of the publication have awarded 90 points to the Tempranillo varietal Cuarenta Vendimias Ribera del Duero 2020, thus recognizing its outstanding quality; on this wine the editors note that its slightly grippy tannins reveal a fruity finish. This wine, made from grapes from old vines and aged for 9 months in oak barrels, will also be featured as a «Best Buy» (wine recommended for purchase due to its quality and price) in the November issue of the magazine.
Cuarenta Vendimias Ribera del Duero 2020 is an exclusive wine for the on-trade that is presented under the signature of winemaker Elena Martín Oyagüe, who is responsible for selecting this wine, which stands out visually for its intense cherry red color with purple reflections.
On the nose this wine presents hints of liquorice and mature black fruits, blackberry and notes of very ripe plum over a spicy background in perfect harmony with the touches of mocha and dark-roasted hints from the barrel. Potent in the mouth, with complexity and structure, its sweet tannins are well assembled, while in retronasal, with the memory of the notes of black wild berries, spicy notes appear. Very long finish.
