With this new inter-cooperative project, the leading winery in the winemaking of Verdejo in DO Rueda reinforces its commitment to include different varieties and appellations of origin in its catalogue, that already has red wines from DO Ribera del Duero and DO Toro

La Seca, 03 February 2021.- Bodega Cuatro Rayas is pleased to announce the launch of Cuatro Rayas Cuarenta Vendimias Rioja, an exclusive brand for the hospitality industry and speciality wine shops. Made with Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Graciano varieties, it is aged for 12-month in American and French oak barrels and put on the market under the label of Crianza.

This new wine rounds out the Cuatro Rayas’ exclusive range ‘Cuarenta Vendimias’, born in 2015 with the release of Cuatro Rayas Cuarenta Vendimias Verdejo as a homage to the 40-year career of the winery technical manager and renowned winemaker Ángel Calleja. Also, Cuarenta Vendimias Rioja is a significant step forward in the commitment of this cooperative winery, located in DO Rueda and specialised in making Verdejo wines, to the addition of red wines in its product portfolio, since it has two Ribera del Duero: Cuatro Rayas Ribera del Duero, Tempranillo made with grapes from selected more than 30-year-old vines, and Cuarenta Vendimias Ribera del Duero, single-variety wine exclusive for the hospitality industry and wine bars, made with grapes from more than 40-year-old vineyards, as well as an oak-aged Tempranillo DO Toro.

Thus, Cuatro Rayas Cuarenta Vendimias Rioja consolidates the leading winery position in winemaking and commercialisation of white wines from Rueda in the Spanish quality red wine market. This new wine from Cuatro Rayas is produced in Aldeanueva de Ebro, in La Rioja, known by having different types of soil—rocky and clay—, at several altitudes, and low rainfall. This red wine combines Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Graciano varieties in a unique selection made by the technical manager and winemaker at Bodega Cuatro Rayas: Elena M. Oyagüe.

«FLAVOURFUL, GOOD STRUCTURE, AND WELL-BALANCED»

The new addition to the exclusive range Cuarenta Vendimias shows a beautiful, bright garnet red medium-high robe and ruby edges. On the nose, red and black berries jam (mulberry, strawberry, raspberry) notes, beautifully integrated with balsamic aromas reminiscent of vanilla and dark-roasted flavours from the wood. On the palate, it is flavourful, with good structure and well-balanced. Red fruit jam flavours resonate with roasted coffee cream hints and milk and cocoa accents. Balanced, great mouthfeel, and a long finish. Reminiscent of ripe red fruit, with pleasant and refined tannins. It is best served between 16 °C and 18 °C, and pairs to perfection with red meat, game, and cured cheese.

GAMA CUATRO RAYAS CUARENTA VENDIMIAS

Grapes from more than 40-years-old vineyards and the expertise of the person who for 40 harvests was the Alma Mater of Bodega Cuatro Rayas—the seasoned winemaker Ángel Calleja—give the name to this wine range distributed exclusively for the hospitality industry and specialist shops. Made with a unique selection of grapes from old vines performed by the cooperative’s winemakers located in the province of Valladolid; a total of five wines features this careful product range, allowing a full tour throughout different appellations of origin.

Besides the new red wine DO Ca. Rioja, produced with a coupage of Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Graciano, this range also includes other two brands made with Verdejo variety: Cuatro Rayas Cuarenta Vendimias Verdejo, and Cuatro Rayas Cuarenta Vendimias Cuvée, a Verdejo for ageing that combines French oak barrel and stainless-steel vat fermentation, then blended for 5-month ageing on its lees. Cuatro Rayas Cuarenta Vendimias Sauvignon—an elegant varietal DO Rueda wine specially selected by the winery technical manager—and Cuatro Rayas Cuarenta Vendimias Ribera del Duero—Tempranillo with 10-month oak-barrel ageing that stands out by its colour, aroma, and palate intensity.
