La Seca, Valladolid. 4 December 2024 As a part of the collaboration between Bodega Cuatro Rayas and Milana Brewing, we developed a Grape Lager—a beer that uniquely combines grape and barley malt crafted with vat bottom fermentation yeasts that work at lower temperatures. Verdejo variety berries are added to the hops, resulting in a distinctive drink with light aromatic notes from the yeast that highlight the freshness of this variety.

After getting the wort by malting the barley, we add the German hops; the resulting product is then blended with the must from night-harvested Verdejo grapes in a ratio of approximately 10 per cent. Both the barley wort and Verdejo must are fermented together in stainless steel vats. Later, it gets slightly oak notes coming from the barrels used for wine ageing.
It has a straw yellow colour. On the nose, it reveals the fruity freshness of the grape, complemented by subtle herbaceous aromas. On the palate, it invites long sips, balancing mild sweetness from the cereal with some bitterness; the finish is marked by the characteristic fruitiness of the Verdejo variety and a delicate touch of wood.

A project with Green & Social spirit
The R&D project to develop this drink was led by Roberto L. Tello, winemaker of Bodega Cuatro Rayas, who along with the founders of Milana Brewing, Marcos e Ismael Gómez, and the master brewer Alfredo Cabezón initiated this partnership for the investigation and development of a ‘grape lager’ craft beer. Having Verdejo grapes of the cooperative as the main ingredient, this initiative is part of Bodega Cuatro Rayas’ ‘Green & Social’ plan—a strategy that brings together the commitment to respect the environment, to promote the socio-economic development of the rural areas, and to improve the living conditions of the people who live and work there. The small artisan brewery in Montemayor de Pililla proved to be the ideal ‘partner’ for an innovative product that would follow trailblazing path set by Bodega Cuatro Rayas with their beer ‘61’ Verdejo ALE, launched in 2021 and the ‘61’ Vermouth Verdejo, introduced in 2017.
