For years now, Bodega Cuatro Rayas has applied a system based on confusing moth males by releasing sexual pheromones to avoid the chemical control of these insects and leaving any residue on the vine

La Seca, 04 August 2022 – . Bodega Cuatro Rayas, a leader winery in the DO Rueda, uses a system based on sexual pheromones which aim to confuse moth males before mating to avoid procreation and reproduction. Using this method, the winery reinforces its commitment to sustainability because it doesn’t pollute the environment or damage the grape, allowing for a better result. In doing so, the conservation of the ecosystem is guaranteed by becoming an alternative to the traditional chemical control.

The cooperative contributes to preserving the environment by using diffusers that spread pheromones to induce moth sexual confusion. The amount emitted through this system depends on the weather and the reproductive stages of the insects at that moment. Moreover, the placement is carried out strategically, considering the vineyard geography and extension to increase the wine quality, minimize the infected grape amount, and improve the wildlife species.

These diffusers used by Bodega Cuatro Rayas have shown that they managed to significantly reduce the moth population in the vineyards from the third year of the implementation. The moths gnaw the berry skin, eat it, and even facilitate the spread of moulds in the vines.
Hence the winery uses this system—which goes in line with its «Green & Social» strategy—ensuring better conservation of the vine and grape and other animals living in the vineyard. That way, alterations to the ecosystem are prevented, respecting wild fauna and flora.
