  • Outstanding tasting results in the halfway point of the research and development of Cuatro Rayas’ ‘Longverdejo’

Outstanding tasting results in the halfway point of the research and development of Cuatro Rayas’ ‘Longverdejo’

The archeoenology and innovation labours in the field and winery were remarkably successful in their bid for increasing Verdejo variety’s longevity and ageing potential. Also, they enhance the value of sustainable work in the field that allows obtaining musts with lower pH levels and higher acidity, as well as winemaking with isolated yeasts from century-old cellars

It overcomes the first milestone set in the project co-financed by the CDTI with ERDF funds and in cooperation with the Vine and Vineyard Research Institute (IIVV) of the University of León

La Seca, 9 March 2021.- The cooperative Bodega Cuatro Rayas has passed the halfway point of the ‘Longverdejo’ project that aims to improve Verdejo varietal wines’ longevity potential. This initiative, under the name of ‘Study of the Verdejo variety longevity in D.O. Rueda through soil management, vineyard handling, and archeoenology’, has completed its first milestone set in this project co-financed by the CDTI with ERDF funds, and in cooperation with the Vine and Vineyard Research Institute (IIVV, by its acronym in Spanish) of the University of León.

A few days ago, for that matter, the CDTI supervised in the facilities of the winery the progress of the goals set in the research and development of innovative approaches in soil and plant handling, indigenous yeasts selection, and the introduction of new eco-friendly viticulture techniques—such as further organic fertilisation and phytosanitary control methods. All this aiming to improve the commercial shelf life and the possibility to allocate the wine for ageing. The balance of results of the fertilization and the ecological phytosanitary control on the ‘Longverdejo’ vineyards has been very positive, with an excellent response regarding the health status of the plants and their evolution.

During the visit of the CDTI, where they tasted the wines produced—there are five different ones—, it was emphasised the sustainable labour in the field, allowing for musts with lower pH levels and higher acidity as a winemaking process with isolated yeasts from century-old cellars.

A PROJECT CO-FINANCED BY THE CDTI WITH ERDF FUNDS

Bodega Cuatro Rayas leads the project ‘Longverdejo’, where the Vine and Vineyard Research Institute (IIVV by its acronym in Spanish) of the University of León with PhD. Enrique Garzón’s research team also participates as an outsourcing entity The initiative has an overall budget of €599,006.36, and it is co-financed by the CDTI with the European Union ERDF funds through the 2014-2020 Multiregional Operational Programme for Smart Growth. ‘Longverdejo’ has a scheduled duration of 36 months, between 1 September 2019 and 31 August 2022.
